Filipino Man Killed by CTrain at Whitehorn Station

By Adrian Dayrit

On Monday February 20, 30-year- old Rafael Carlos was hit and killed by a CTrain at Whitehorn

station crossing at 36 th Ave NE.

Carlos leaves behind his father and brother who live here in Calgary and a sister and mother

who reside in the Philippines. Rafael Carlos’ uncle, Dave Carlos, set up a GoFundMe to help the

family bring Rafael’s body back to the Philippines to be buried.

Rafael’s body is still being held in Calgary pending investigation while arrangements are being

made by the family here and in the Philippines. No local memorial services are planned as the

family waits for Rafael’s mother’s decisions on the matter.

“We are waiting for dental records to possibly bring Rafael home and whether that is viable,”

says Dave Carlos about the arrangements for his nephew’s body.

Rafael was working and studying in Calgary before the tragic accident.

Rafael was believed by police to be distracted at the time of the accident by his cell phone. His

death spurred Ward 1 Councillor, Ward Sutherland, to call for better enforcement of existing

bylaws where traffic accidents involving pedestrians occur.

Rafael’s family hopes to raise enough money for funeral arrangements either here in Calgary or

back home in the Philippines. Money is being raised on GoFundMe at the following URL: rafael-carlos
