Having many Filipino friends and having attended many parties and events organized by the Filipino community, it is undeniable that Korean pop culture, especially K-pop, has transcended cultural boundaries and captured the hearts of many Filipinos. It is heartwarming to be able to share and celebrate the Korean culture with my Filipino friends, but the significance of celebrating the Korean culture is perhaps much more than just being able to enjoy the same music and dramas. July 27, 2023, marks the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement. This milestone should be commemorated and celebrated together with the Filipino community in Canada. The Korean War was a defining moment in history that saw many nations coming together to safeguard freedom and democracy. Among those who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the Koreans fighting for freedom were the valiant Filipino soldiers. As we reflect on the sacrifices made during that turbulent time, it is vital to recognize the shared values and aspirations of both the Filipino and Korean communities living in Canada today. This country that we call home has become a symbol of freedom and opportunity for both of our communities. With both the Filipino and Korean communities significantly contributing to the country’s social and economic fabric, I see the two communities being more than just friends, but partners and brothers in arms, fighting for a brighter future. With gratitude and appreciation for the friendship and partnership, I will stay committed to working together to protect our freedom, uphold democratic values, and to make Canada an even better place for all Canadians. Salamat po and Saranghae-yo!
