Water (sports drinks, coconut water, pedialyte)
Water. The elixir of life. This should be a priority! Alcohol drains fluids from our body., When there is nothing left in the tank, the body will drain liquids from any available source, including the brain. Hello pounding headache. Sugary drinks are also good for, restoring electrolytes. Pop open a box of coconut water, this has five of the essential electrolytes found in our blood. Drink plenty of these before going to bed.
Pickle juice
This might sound weird. But I swear it works! The liquid contains vinegar and salt. Which is perfect to rehydrate the body, and replenish our electrolytes and sodium levels. Take a 2 oz shot before and after a night of drinking.
Eggs
This is an all-star for a reason. Eggs are full of amino acids like cysteine and taurine. Taurine boost liver functions and may help restore your liver. Cysteine breaks down acetaldehyde, this is the headache causing chemical when the liver breaks down alcohol.
Chicken noodle soup or miso soup
This might be the most conventional hangover food. Ask mom for her famous chicken noodle soup or just reach for that cup o’ noodles in your pantry. This will help restock sodium and water levels in the body. Chicken also contains cysteine, which will give your liver the boost it needs.
Ingredients:
1/2 tablespoon butter
2 celery sliced
3-4 large carrots diced
1 clove garlic minced
Homemade chicken broth, or substitute about 6 cups quality chicken broth
1 teaspoon salt, to taste
½ teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper, to taste
1/8 tsp each dried rosemary, sage, and crushed red pepper
1 batch egg noodles
3 cups rRotisserie chicken meat
Instructions:
1.Add butter, diced celery and carrots to a large stock pot over medium-high heat. Saute for three minutes. Add garlic and cook for another 30 seconds. Add reserved chicken broth (if you made the broth from the rotisserie chicken bones), or add store-bought chicken broth. Add an additional 3-4 cups of additional chicken broth. Season the broth with salt (definitely TASTE the broth before adding more salt), pepper, and a tiny pinch of rosemary, sage and crushed red pepper.
2.Bring broth to a boil. Add noodles (either the uncooked homemade egg noodles, or dry store-bought pasta) and cook just until noodles are al dente. If using store-bought noodles, be cautious not to overcook them! Remove pot from heat as soon as they are just barely tender to bite. The noodles will continue to cook once you remove the pot from the heat, and you don’t want them mushy.
3.Add chicken meat from the rotisserie chicken. At this point I taste the broth again and add more seasonings, if needed, to taste. I may add another small spoonful of chicken bouillon paste, more salt and pepper if it needs it.
Another option is the Japanese favorite, miso soup. Like the chicken noodle, the fermented miso will help aid digestion.
Toast with honey, salted crackers or oatmeal
Whole wheat toast is my preference. This can raise your blood sugar without upsetting the stomach, drizzle a little bit of honey, for instant energy. Oats will give plenty of vitamin B, calcium and iron. This will neutralize acid and help raise sugar levels.
So contrary to what everyone is saying about head down to your local greasy joint, it’s not a great idea. Fatty or greasy meals can irritate our stomachs and will make us feel like crap.
But downing down a big greasy burger, will help insulate the stomach, preventing alcohol to absorb quickly into our blood stream.
Yeehaw!
