“TO GRILL OR NOT TO GRILL” that is the question. Warm weather is finally here! That means grilling season is back. Whether you use gas or prefer that charcoal flavour, I have the scoop to get your grill ready.

DO A TOP-TO-BOTTOM INSPECTION

Check for rust! Metal pieces have a tendency to rust when exposed to the elements, (that is the never ending winter that we just had). You can soak your grill in a baking soda/water mix over night to get rid of it. Use a wire brush to file down any rust you see in and around your bbq grill.

Check for insects that may have snuck in during the winter. Check the fuel line for cracks. Use the soapy water test. Brush soapy water on the line and along the connections. Turn on the line, if you see bubbles while the gas is running. Tighten your connections or replace the line.

Another way to clean your grill is to turn your bbq on high for 15 minutes. This will cook out all the debris and turn them into ashes that should brush off easily. Use half an onion on a fork as a brush to get off any remaining debris. Yes an onion! You get the best of both worlds, no wire bristles left behind, that can get on to your foods and you will have a well seasoned grill.

CLEAN FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Your grill has a lot of parts and pieces. Start by removing debris with a wire brush. Check the burners for clogs, remove the tubes and hose them down with water. Make sure to empty your grease drip pan, which can cause a fire.

For a charcoal grill,  empty the ashes and remove the unburnt charcoal. Put new charcoal in. This will burn much easier.

Spray your grill with cooking oil, for a sparkling clean grill. And ALLA! Now you are ready.
