In Edmonton, Filipina Marjorie Newman is running in the Edmonton-Glenora riding for the United Conservative Party.
Newman is a registered immigration consultant with ICCRC. She is involved in her community and various Filipino associations in Edmonton. Influenced by the stories of her fellow entrepreneurs and business owners who were unsatisfied with the way current government policy affected their livelihood, she decided to run for MLA.
“I aim to help reignite the Albertan economy, to represent my Edmonton-Glenora riding and be the voice of the Filipino community in the Alberta legislature,” Newman says.
As an immigrant, she’s faced many struggles moving to Canada. Like many kababayans, the allure of Alberta’s once-booming industry was a promise for her to better her family’s quality of life.
She says she is moved and influenced by the stories of the people she meets, people who she hopes to help and people whose lives she can help.
The Alberta Provincial election is April 16.
